Major Sources of Ground Water in Colorado

Physical Descriptions of Major Ground Water Sources
While most of Colorado's surface water occurs west of the Continental Divide, most of Colorado's ground water occurs east of the Continental Divide. Aquifers which yield the most water are found in alluvium. These types of aquifers are located primarily in the High Plains in the Arkansas and South Platte River Basins and in the San Luis Valley. In the mountains and on the Western Slope, lower yielding sandstone aquifers are predominant.
